Amal Mohamoud, MSW, RSW
Founder & CEO, Hana Legacy Foundation
Amal Mohamoud is a Registered Social Worker (RSW), mental health advocate, and community leader with a passion for equity, social justice, and culturally responsive care. She graduated with High Distinction Honours from the University of Toronto (U of T) with a Bachelor’s degree in Critical Studies in Equity Studies and Women and Gender Studies, before pursuing her Master of Social Work (MSW) at U of T. With over a decade of experience, she has worked extensively in mental health, crisis intervention, and advocacy, focusing on breaking barriers for marginalized communities. Her journey toward advocacy is deeply personal. After losing her mother, Hana Hussein Musa, to suicide, Mohamoud turned her grief into action, determined to spark dialogue, tackle stigma, and create spaces where mental health is embraced with compassion, not silence.
She first shared her story on The Digital Sisterhood Podcast, in an episode titled “Her Name is Hana”, which reached over 9 million listeners across 147 countries. The overwhelming response reinforced the urgent need for culturally informed mental health resources, leading to the creation of the Hana Legacy Foundation.
Through the Hana Legacy Foundation, Amal’s mission is to honour her mother’s legacy by ensuring that no one suffers alone. The foundation provides mental health education, advocacy, and culturally grounded support for individuals navigating grief, trauma, and emotional struggles. She envisions a world where mental wellness is treated with the same care as physical health, where no one is left to struggle in silence, and where people feel empowered to reclaim their stories and embrace their strength.
Mohamoud’s dedication to mental health advocacy has been recognized through awards, community initiatives, and educational platforms. She has led workshops, facilitated discussions, and spoken at events to bring awareness to mental health, equity, and the importance of culturally informed support.
She was awarded the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award by the University of Toronto African Alumni Association, recognizing her impact in advocacy, storytelling, and community mental health awareness. Her personal story and commitment to breaking mental health stigma have reached thousands, inspiring conversations about grief, resilience, and the barriers to seeking support.
Through the Hana Legacy Foundation, Mohamoud continues to push for greater mental health awareness and accessible support. Whether through community engagement, speaking opportunities, or direct advocacy, she remains dedicated to ensuring mental wellness is a right, not a privilege.
At the Hana Legacy Foundation, her vision is clear:
To create a world where mental wellness is embraced with compassion, not shame.
To provide culturally responsive, faith-informed mental health support for those who need it most.
To empower individuals to reclaim their stories, find strength in healing, and break generational cycles of silence.
Under Mohamoud’s leadership, the Hana Legacy Foundation is more than an organization. It is a movement. A movement for healing, justice, and the belief that no one should ever feel alone in their pain.
She does not just speak about resilience. She lives it. She stands before the world as proof that from grief can come purpose, from pain can come power, and from loss can come a legacy that changes lives.
